MOM DECIDED TO STAY home so Jazzy wouldn’t feel deserted. At least, that’s what she said. I was guessing she was still tired from traveling on Monday and was readjusting to being here in Abingdon. Dad drove me to work so he could get his book, and I suggested we check with Grandpa Dave to see if Ms. Oakes had hired him to fix the doors.

“If she has, I’ll be happy to help him,” Dad said.

“Before we get there, you should know Max told me the thieves were looking for the needlepoint I bought at Ms. Cross’s shop.”

“That means the same people who killed Violet Cross likely broke into your place. I’m taking you back home.”

“No, you aren’t,” I said. “At work is the safest place I can be today.”

“You’re right. What about your mother being at the house?”

My mind raced. There was no way the thieves could know where I lived—right? But how had they known where my shop was? That I was the one who’d bought the needlepoint? That I owned Designs on You? That I’d taken the needlepoint to my shop and not to my home?

“I have to talk to Thomas Wortley,” I said.

“The ghost? Who lives in the typewriter?”

“He doesn’t live in the typewriter—he only uses it to communicate. For some reason, he can’t talk.” I frowned. “I’m not sure if it’s a physical thing—that he was mute when he died—or that he simply can’t talk beyond the grave or something. Max must be pretty advanced.”

“Yes, I can imagine Max would be ahead of her time no matter what,” he said.

“I did tell Mr. Cross last night that I’d try to set up a meeting for Grandpa to look at Cross’s Antiques. Do you think the two of you could go check out the shop and see if you happen to find anything I’ve missed?”

“And talk with the ghost?”

I inclined my head. “Well, yeah. But if Trish Oakes has got Grandpa working on the broken door frames, I might have to ask Zoe and Dwight to do that sooner because I need some answers.”
